Car Camping With My Juniper, Tessie!

Move over, tent stakes and poles.

Big Sur, September 2025

Camp Mode has changed my camping game.

Camping with climate control never exactly crossed my mind until I was car shopping and discovered Tesla’s awesome feature as part of their software for their range of vehicles.

Up until I upgraded my car, I had always camped old school style:

I own just enough gear for two people—a 2-person tent, chairs, sleeping bags/pads, and a lantern.

I don’t know if I would consider packing and pitching a tent anymore. The last time was at Coachella earlier this year when we camped with a bunch of friends, so it might just be for another music festival should we decide to attend again in the future.

We bought Tesla’s official Model Y air mattress. I loved the convenience of it with the air pump and adapter, however, found it to be too firm for my liking. I intend to get a softer one for next season.

I wouldn’t recommend it if you generally sleep on a plush mattress at home.

There’s a slight incline after the seats’ backrests are lowered. If you’re a princess and the pea like me, you will want to remove the bench in the back for a flatter foundation to sleep on.

Here are the instructions directly from the car owner’s manual.

Thank me later. 😉

When the car’s on Camp Mode, Sentry is disabled. Should you leave your vehicle for a prolonged period of time for a hike, I recommend turning off Camp Mode so that you can lock the car and turn on Sentry while you’re away.

Leaving the car on overnight uses about 12% of the battery each night—about 36 miles for those who track battery usage that way.

We did not camp near a power source, so had to ensure swinging by a Supercharger beforehand!

I appreciated getting to be outdoors and disconnecting from city life while maintaining a decent level of comfort.

Another must-have on my personal camping list is a portable toilet (the green tent).

I also bought and hung up warm string lights from Amazon for ambiance. It was initially for aesthetic reasons, but came in handy while we chilled in the car before bedtime.

Hope my tips are helpful to you! Happy camping!
